Abstract: Drone technology has developed to the point where, in a few years, we can expect parts of the airspace to become congested with drones. Governments around the world are currently proposing rules for how to regulate this airspace. However, many questions are still open and expertise from AI and Market Design is urgently needed. In this talk, I will introduce Market Design for Drone Traffic Management as a new problem to our field of research. I will present our understanding of this problem based on ten interviews we have conducted with stakeholders from regulatory bodies as well as private and public drone companies. I will explain why this problem is a prototypical AI and market design challenge and show some design desiderata. Finally, I will provide an overview of the solution space to point out possible directions for future research.
