Department of Informatics Requirements Engineering Research Group

Martin Glinz rehired by IfI

The IfI celocation challenge: Eliciting, designing, and negotiating an optimum in the triangle of stakeholder needs, given constraints, and refurbishment cost.
The Challenge of relocating IfI to a another building

As of October 1, UZH’s Department of Informatics (IfI) has rehired its professor emeritus Martin Glinz as a planner and coordinator of the relocation of the department to a new building. It is a 50 percent job for one year.

In summer 2023, UZH has decided to rent an existing office building at Binzmühlestrasse 11-13 in Zurich Oerlikon for twenty years, totally renovate it, and then relocate the Department of Informatics to that building in 2026.

Planning the interior structure of an office building so that it satisfies the needs of a large university department is a major challenge. Almost 20 years ago, Martin Glinz had done this planning for the BIN building, where the majority of IfI is located today.

Given that experience, the department has asked Martin whether he would be willing to do this job again for the new building.

The challenge in this new job will be to elicit, design, and negotiate an optimum in the triangle of stakeholder needs, given constraints, and refurbishment cost. So it is a requirements engineering challenge to a large extent, but will also extend to shaping and designing solutions.
