Mars Helicopter NASA JPL

The Robotics and Perception Group, led by Davide Scaramuzza, started in 2020 collaborating with the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The research of Scaramuzza's team inspired the design of the drone technology behind NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter. In 2021 NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter completeted the first autonomous flight on Mars.

The 2030 Mars Science Helicopter mission plans to deploy advanced unmanned helicopters on Mars. The new helicopters will require a novel approach to handle the complex and uneven landscape.
