06.05.2020Dan Olteanu becomes Professor for Big Data Science

Dan Olteanu studied Computer Science at the Politehnica University of Bucharest and received his PhD from Ludwig Maximilian University in 2005. After a two-year stint as postdoctoral assistant at the University of Saarland and visiting scientist at Cornell University, he took the role of university lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford and fellow of St Cross College. He became full professor at Oxford in 2016. He also held positions as visiting associate professor at the University of California, Berkeley, Turing fellow at Alan Turing Institute in London, and computer scientist at LogicBlox and relational AI start-up software companies.

Dan's research interests revolve around understanding computational challenges on data processing and designing simple and scalable solutions towards these challenges. His most recent work is on efficient algorithms for machine learning over relational data and incremental maintenance of analytical workloads under data updates (https://fdbresearch.github.io/).

At the Department of Informatics, Dan will head the new research group on Data Systems and Theory (DAST) and teach selected topics on data science, efficient algorithms, and foundations of computing.
