Davide Scaramuzza, Professor at the Department of Informatics, wins a Consolidator Grant by the European Research Council (ERC). His project on the performance of flying robots in rescue operations will be supported by 2 million Euros.
Scaramuzza's goal is to improve autonomous drones by using only onboard cameras and computation. These drones shall be better than human pilots. In complex search-and-rescue operations the focus is on speed, versatility, and robustness. As speed is particularly important, Davide Scaramuzza's research team will develop new algorithms for event cameras, a novel high-speed sensor.
