Dan Olteanu was keynote speaker at VLDB (Very Large Data Bases 2020). VLDB is a premier annual international forum for data management and database researchers, vendors, practitioners, application developers, and users.
In 2020 VLDB featured a strong program made up a quarter of over 800 submitted research papers. The conference also featured three keynotes, many system demonstrations, and several industrial sessions, tutorials, and workshops. The conference took place online in Virtual Tokyo at the beginning of September 2020 and attracted 4800 registered participants.
Dan Olteanu's keynote reflected on the relevance of database research in the era of data science. It highlights several key contributions that his team and collaborators made towards unifying machine learning and databases. It also shows how novel theoretical and system development in data processing can boost the runtime performance of machine learning over relational databases.
