Data Humanism for Interactive Data Visualization

The Data Humanism Manifesto challenges conventional views on data by emphasizing subjectivity, quality, and human-centric design. It advocates for a shift from big, objective, and efficiency-driven approaches to a focus on small, qualitative, and serendipitous insights. The manifesto encourages researchers and designers to see data as a medium for exploring possibilities, depicting complexity, and emphasizing people over numbers to foster a more human connection with data.

Giorgia Lupi's Data Humanism manifesto calls for a shift in how data is visualized and understood. It emphasizes that data is not just abstract numbers but representations of human experiences, behaviors, and actions. Lupi advocates for making data more relatable and context-aware, urging designers and researchers to include qualitative narratives and human stories behind the numbers. The goal is to create visualizations that resonate on an emotional and intuitive level, promoting empathy and nuanced interpretations instead of solely focusing on efficiency and accuracy. This approach aims to make data more inclusive and accessible, fostering a deeper connection between people and information.

In this research stream, we draw connections between principles pf data humanism and interactive visual data analysis.
