Best Paper Award (2nd Runner Up) for Aleksandra Garazha, Cédric Merz, Gerhard Schwabe and Liudmila Zavolokina at ICIS 2024

Congratulations! The paper «Resilience in Times of Crisis: Empowering Refugees with Self-Sovereign Identity» by Aleksandra Garazha, Cédric Merz, Gerhard Schwabe and Liudmila Zavolokina received the 2nd runner up for the best overall conference complete paper award at the International Conference on Information Systems 2024 in Bangkok.

The award-winning paper «Resilience in Times of Crisis: Empowering Refugees with Self-Sovereign Identity» was authored by
– Aleksandra Garazha, Department of Informatics, University of Zurich
– Cédric Merz, Ergon Informatik and former MSc student at the Department of Informatics, University of Zurich
– Gerhard Schwabe, Department of Informatics, University of Zurich
– Liudmila Zavolokina, Department of Information Systems, University of Lausanne, and University of Zurich

The paper proposes a digital identity (eID) to mitigate the challenges for both refugees and organizations in the Swiss asylum process – issues revealed by the Ukrainian refugee crisis, beginning in 2022.

While refugees are faced with time-consuming and cumbersome administrative tasks, involved authorities and organizations are overwhelmed with slow paper-based processes, redundant work, and wrong data.

The challenges of implementing a centralized identity, particularly given Switzerland's decentralization, led the authors to choose a Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) concept. The authors formulated design principles for SSI-based eID for refugees and described how these principles impact feasibility, refugees’ empowerment, and organizations’ efficiency.
