Clara-Maria Barth, a PhD student at the Interactive Visual Data Analysis Group and People and Computing Lab (IfI), co-organized together with Alexander Lill (IfI, Human Aspects of Software Engineering Lab) and Federica Zavattaro (UZH Institute for Implementation Science in Health Care) the DSI Health Innovathon from November 21st to 22nd at the Digital Society Initiative (DSI) at the University of Zurich.
Prof. Dr. Viktor von Wyl (Institute for Implementation Science in Health Care), Prof. Dr. Jürgen Bernard (Department of Informatics) and Andreia Fernandes (UZH Innovation Office) –experts in digital health, data visualization, and entrepreneurship– opened the DSI Health Innovathon.
Viktor von Wyl shared insights from the SwissCovid app, its evaluation, and lessons learned as part of the Swiss Covid Taskforce. Jürgen Bernard presented his research on interactive visual data, as exemplified by the MS Pattern Explorer used for interactive visual exploration of temporal activity patterns for multiple sclerosis. Andreia Fernandes highlighted the entrepreneurial resources available to aspiring founders and offered valuable guidance on fostering creative thinking and effective brainstorming techniques.
Over two days, 22 bachelor’s, master’s, PhD students and Postdocs from diverse backgrounds collaborated to tackle real-world health challenges proposed by five expert mentors. Researchers and professionals from industry acted as mentors and provided datasets, real-world scenarios, and guidance to the teams.
The five health challenges included:
The jury awarded first place to Gabriela Morgenshtern’s team for their project on supporting self-reflection in type 1 diabetes self-management. The second place went to Dr. Stephan Gerhard’s team for their project on analyzing and visualizing data on menstrual health for generating actionable insights for women.
In her research, Clara-Maria Barth focuses on personalizing digital health technologies for people with chronic conditions. Alexander Lill focuses in his research on software developer productivity, and Federica Zavattaro’s specialty is trust in the health data-sharing policy process.
