Efficient point-based rendering methods are investigated in this
project. For the interactive display of large 3D point data sets we
develop efficient hierarchical multiresolution data structures that
support real-time adaptive level-of-detail (LOD) extraction and
rendering. To cope with very large data from densely sampled and scanned
3D surfaces, we additionally investigate novel methods for interactive
out-of-core visualization of large point sets. To further improve
point-based rendering we introduce novel point blending and splatting
algorithms such as a single-pass point rendering algorithm that is also
the basis for effective rendering of transparent point sampled surfaces.
